Habitat
Level lowland forest, particularly freshwater and peat-swamp forests, on the floodplains of large rivers. Alsp disturbed, recently burned and logged areas.
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar, Thailand (B).
Borneo, Sumatra (and Mentawai Is off western coast) and peninsular Malaysia; recently discovered in Thailand, although probably now extinct.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 250 - 500 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Forest loss and fragmentation due to logging, dam construction and conversion to agriculture, forest fires, development of lowland rivers as major transport routes, hunting are the main threats.

Habits
Usually solitary but occasionally in small groups.
Subspecies
Sometimes considered subspecies of Asian Woollyneck (Ciconia episcopus), but now generally accepted as separate species.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Asian Woollyneck (Ciconia episcopus) which has white lower foreneck, dark bill and bronze coloration on inner wing-coverts.
