Description (10)
Image of Royal Spoonbill
  Sexes alike, male has slightly longer bill.

Adults: General plumage is white. Long nuptial plumes on crown and upper nape. Red spot on forehead. Front of head naked, black with warts. Naked areas under arms yellow. Face and throat, naked and black. Eye, red. Eyelids and a small patch above and sometimes below eye yellow-ochre. Bill, straight with spoon-shaped tip, black with caruncled central area slate. Legs, black. Feet, black.

Immatures: As adults but with some black patches on flight feathers. Nuptial plumes on crown, red patch on forehead and yellow-ochre patches on face are all absent. Bill, rather smooth.

Downy Young: White. Bill, flesh. Feet, flesh. Face, dusky.

Abundance (Guide)

Common except in arid parts of its range. Rare in Tasmania.

Habitat
Larger shallow waters, inland and coastal. Well-vegatated shallow freshwater wetlands. Floodplains, billabongs, sewerage ponds, irrigation storages, tidal mudflats, estuaries, saltmarshes, saltfields, mangroves, islands. Less frequent visitor to farm dams than Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes).

Range (Guide)
Australia (B), Indonesia, New Zealand (B), Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands (B), Timor-Leste (NB).

Vagrant to New Caledonia.

Australia and New Zealand; Java and Sulawesi through Lesser Sundas and Moluccas to southern New Guinea and Rennell I (Solomon Is).

Estimated population is 25,000 - 100,000 (2010).

Nest
An open platform of broken-down reeds and sticks, placed a few meters above water among the branches of leafy trees. Nest singly or in loose colonies together with ibises, darters and cormorants. Both sexes build nest.

Eggs (Guide)
Up to 4; dull white with brown streaks or spots; oblong-oval; about 65 x 45 mm. Incubation: about 20 -25 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous.

Subspecies
Considered by some to form superspecies with Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Black-faced Spoonbill (Platalea minor) and African Spoonbill (Platalea alba). Sometimes regarded as subspecies of Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes) which has whitish-yellow bill, and greyer legs.
