First Described (Guide)
(Hume, 1875)

Habitat
Fomerly wetlands and grassland, such as pools, marshes, open grasslands or watercourses including wide rivers with sand and gravel bars. Now deciduous dipterocarp forest.

Range (Guide)
Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (E), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Myanmar (E), Thailand (E), Vietnam (B).

Once widespread from Burma to south-western China and south to Indochina and Borneo, range now much reduced; apparently restricted to southern Viet Nam and Borneo, though also suspected to occur in Kampuchea.
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 330 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Habitat loss, through logging, widespread piecemeal clearance of lowland forest, conversion of wetlands for agriculture is the main threat.

Food
Amphibians, molecrickets, invertebrates, leeches, snails, and eels.

Voice
Territorial birds utter a loud, hoarse screaming 'errrrrrh' or 'errrrrroh' and a moaning 'errh errh errh errh'. Also screams mixed with honking 'errrrh owk owk owk owk' and more subdued 'ohhaaa ohhaaa' and 'errrr-ah'.

Subspecies
Often considered subspecies of Red-naped Ibis (Pseudibis papillosa), with which forms superspecies.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Red-naped Ibis (Pseudibis papillosa) which has red patch on hind crown and nape and lacks white collar, Giant Ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea) which is much larger with uniformly paler, dark-barred head, upper neck, wing-coverts and secondaries.
