Description (10)
Image of Straw-necked Ibis
  Sexes alike, male longer billed.

Adults: Back and wings, black with bronze-green sheen Head and throat, bare and black. Upper neck, buff with dark mottling. Balck band across upper breast in females. Stff yellow straw-like feathers on lower neck. Breast, belly and tail, white. Naked yellow patches under wings and on each side of breast. Eye, brown. Bill, black and caruncled. Legs, red. Feet, black. In courtship, breast skin and area behind eye, red.

Immatures: Dull. Straw-like feathers are absent. Head, feathered downy black-white. Bill, short and straight.

Downy Young: White with dusky head and neck. Bill, black. Feet, black.

Common and locally abundant. Nomadic.

Habitat
Grasslands, sometimes far from water, freshwater wetlands, flooded areas, irrigated pastures, crops, playing fields, airfields, sewerage ponds, croplands, tidal mudflats and occasionally saltmarsh.

Range (Guide)
Australia (B), Indonesia, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea.

Australia. Also non breeding visitor to southern parts of New Guinea; occasional visitor to Tasmania and several islands of Bass Strait.

Insects, molluscs, frogs, snakes, caterpillars, grasshoppers and their larvae.

Voice
Hoarse coughs and grunts. Long grunting 'u-u-urh' in flight. 'orh-orh' and 'urh-urh' in display.

Nest
Platform of sticks, sometimes lined with leaves, on rushes and shrubs, occasionally on the ground. In large colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
Up to 5; dull white; oval; about 67 x 46 mm. Incubation: 20 - 25 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 5 weeks.

Subspecies
Often placed in monospecific genus Carphibis. Said to have hybridized with African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus).

No subspecies.
