Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber). A recent proposal is that they be merged into a single species on basis of close morphological and ecological similiraties and relatively frequent natural hybridization in zone of overlap in Venezuela. Another view is that they may simply be color morphs.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
albus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Southern United States south through Central America and the Greater Antilles to north-western South America.
ramobustorum Patten, 2012 - Northern South America.
