Habitat
Inland wetlands, including large freshwater lakes and marshes.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Status EX
It was extinct before 1900 on the South Island, for reasons unknown, while on the North Island, it is only known from bones.

Subspecies
It has been suggested that this species was identical to the subspecies dubius of Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus).
No subspecies.
