Abundance (Guide)
R - V

Rare vagrant to Christmas Island. A recent sighting (April 2008) was in Broome, WA.

Habitat
Lowlands of freshwater swamps, rice fields, lakes, sometimes along coast, mangroves and tidal pools, usually alone.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, North Korea (B), Philippines, Russia (Asian), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Guam, Mongolia.

Unknown to Northern Mariana Islands.

Breeds from Manchuria and eastern China west to Assam, northern Burma and Andaman Is, and recently also Japan; winters in Malay Peninsula, Indochina, Borneo and Sumatra, and recently in Ryukyu Is.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds in north-eastern India, China (except north-west), South Ussuriland (March - May).

Nest
Simple platform, in a tree. In colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 6; greenish-blue; oval; 38 x 28 mm.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Indian Pond-heron (Ardeola grayii), Java Pond-heron (Ardeola speciosa) and perhaps Madagascar Pond-heron (Ardeola idae).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Java Pond-heron (Ardeola speciosa) which has less obvious dusky tips to outermost primaries.
