During courtship displays, males bark and make ticking sounds. Female utters a soft purr.

Subspecies
Often considered subspecies of Campbell Shag (Leucocarbo campbelli ). Some authors merge colensoi , campbelli and ranfurlyi , and carunculatus , chalconotus and onslowi into single species.
