Voice
During courtship displays, males bark and make ticking sounds. Female utters a soft purr.

Subspecies
Often considered subspecies of Campbell Shag (Leucocarbo campbelli). Some authors merge colensoi, campbelli and ranfurlyi, and carunculatus, chalconotus and onslowi into single species.
