Subspecies
Phalacrocorax atriceps (Turbott 1990) includes bransfieldensis, verrucosus and georgianuscontra Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). BirdLife International does not currently recognise this as a species.
Often considered subspecies of Imperial Shag (Leucocarbo atriceps). Populations of South Georgia Shag (Phalacrocorax georgianus) in South Orkney and South Sandwich Is have frequently been ascribed to present species. Species sometimes placed in genus Notocarbo.
