Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, plantations. From sea-level - 2,700 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Until recently considered to include Lined Forest-falcon (Micrastur gilvicollis), but voice and morphology support specific status for Lined Forest-falcon (Micrastur gilvicollis), which is widely sympatric with present species.

Possible subspecies oaxacae and kalinowskii currently included in subspecies guerilla and zonothorax respectively.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • guerilla Cassin, 1848   -  Southern Mexico to Nicaragua.
  • interstes Bangs, 1907   -  Costa Rica and Panama to western Colombia and western Ecuador.
  • zonothorax (Cabanis, 1866)   -  Colombia and Venezuela, in eastern Andean foothills, southern perhaps to Bolivia.
  • concentricus (Lesson, R, 1830)   -  Southern Venezuela, the Guianas and Amazonia.
  • ruficollis (Vieillot, 1817)   -  South of Amazonia in Brazil, Paraguay and north-central and north-eastern Argentina.
  • olrogi Amadon, 1964   -  North-western Argentina, in subtropical forests.
