Subspecies
As with Black Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus), relationship to Old World species of genus unclear.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
vicarius Friedmann, 1935 - South-eastern Mexico through Central America to western Colombia and western Ecuador.
ornatus (Daudin, 1800) - Eastern Colombia east to the Guianas and Trinidad, and south through eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru, northern and eastern Bolivia and Brazil to Paraguay and northern Argentina (Jujuy to Misiones).
