Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, dry forest, temperate forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon (B), Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], C�te dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Senegal, Somalia, Sudan.

Sierra Leone east to Ethiopia and Somalia, then south to northern Namibia, northern Botswana and north-eastern South Africa.

Subspecies
May form superspecies with Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), and possibly even Little Eagle (Hieraaetus morphnoides). Until recently, frequently called Hieraaetus dubius, but this name apparently refers to Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus).

No subspecies.
