Subspecies
Often regarded as conspecific with Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax ), but morphological studies have shown clear differences which should also be verified by molecular techniques.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
orientalis Cabanis, 1854 - South-eastern European Russia east to L Balkhash and eastern Kazakhstan, or perhaps to Tien Shan and Altai. Winters in Middle East, Arabia and eastern and southern Africa.
nipalensis Hodgson, 1833 - Altai and Tibet east to Manchuria. Winters in southern Asia.
