Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, lowland moist forest, lowland dry shrubland, mangroves, swamp forest, dry savanna, plantations. From sea-level - 800 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Vagrant to USA.

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • livens Bangs & Penard, TE, 1921   -  North-western Mexico.
  • nigra (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1847)   -  Northern Mexico (Sinaloa and Tamaulipas) south to zone of Panama Canal.
  • balzarensis Sclater, WL, 1918   -  Panama east of canal zone on Pacific slope to western Colombia, western Ecuador and north-western Peru (Lambayeque).
  • caerulescens (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Eastern slope of Colombia and Ecuador to the Guianas and Amazonian Peru and Brazil.
  • gracilis (Temminck, 1821)   -  North-eastern Brazil, from Maranhão, Ceará and Piauí to central Goiás and Bahia.
  • flexipes Peters, JL, 1935   -  Southern Brazil (Minas Gerais, southern Goiás and Mato Grosso) and Bolivia through Chaco of Paraguay, to north-central Argentina (south to La Rioja, Córdoba and Buenos Aires) and Uruguay.
