Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 1,800 m.
Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Lowland population are threatened by habitat destruction through clearance for palm plantations.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus), Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk (Accipiter erythrauchen) and perhaps Vinous-breasted Sparrowhawk (Accipiter rhodogaster).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Chestnut collar and short tail distinguish adult from similar Slaty-backed Goshawk (Accipiter luteoschistaceus), Grey Goshawk (Accipiter novaehollandiae) adults are richer rufous below but variable juveniles may differ only in larger size and longer tail.
