Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Nicobar Sparrowhawk (Accipiter butleri) and Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes), and perhaps also Chinese Sparrowhawk (Accipiter soloensis) and Frances's Sparrowhawk (Accipiter francesiae). Formerly considered conspecific with Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes) and sometimes considered to include Nicobar Sparrowhawk (Accipiter butleri).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • cenchroides (Severtsov, 1873)   -  Azerbaijan east to Kazakhstan and Iran east to north-western India, migrating further southern in winter.
  • dussumieri (Temminck, 1824)   -  Central India and Bangladesh.
  • badius (Gmelin, 1788)   -  South-western India and Sri Lanka.
  • poliopsis (Hume, 1874)   -  North-eastern India east to southern China, south to Thailand and Vietnam.
  • sphenurus (Rüppell, 1836)   -  Senegambia east to south-western Arabia, south to northern Zaire and northern Tanzania.
  • polyzonoides Smith, A, 1838   -  Southern Zaire and southern Tanzania to northern South Africa.
