Subspecies
Taxonomic status uncertain and sometimes classified as subspecies of Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela). Shares Philippines with subspecies palawanensis of Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela), but without sympatry. Currently considered to form superspecies with Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela), Great Nicobar Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis klossi), Kinabalu Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis kinabaluensis) and Sulawesi Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis rufipectus).
Proposed subspecies panayensis not valid.
