Subspecies
Doubtful affinities. Usually considered closest to Neophron . Possible subspecies aureus and hemachalanus doubtfully distinct.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
barbatus (Linnaeus, 1758) - North-western Africa and south-western Europe through Turkey, Egypt, Middle East, Iran and Afghanistan to Mongolia and central and north-eastern China.
meridionalis Keyserling & Blasius, JH, 1840 - South-western Arabia and very locally in eastern and southern Africa.
