Habitat
Dry savanna. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, seasonally wet / flooded grassland. From sea-level - 1,200 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 10,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Disjunct Nicaraguan population reportedly indistinguishable from South American populations.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- leonae Chubb, C, 1918 - Nicaragua; northern Colombia through Venezuela and Trinidad to Guyana and Surinam, and south to R Amazon.
- swainsonii Vigors, 1825 - Brazil south of R Amazon to eastern Peru, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
- magnus Chubb, C, 1918 - Coastal western Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru.
