Wrangel I, Heard I and Chukotskiy Peninsula south through Kamchatka and Commander Is to Sea of Okhotsk, Sakhalin and northern Kuril Is, and western Alaska (Diomede Is, Cape Lisburne) south through Bering Sea to Aleutians and east through Gulf of Alaska south to British Columbia (Queen Charlotte Is). Winters offshore and along sea coasts mostly within breeding range, but casually south to central Japan, rarely to western Hawaiian Is, also to southern British Columbia and northern Washington and rarely to Oregon and California.
