Subspecies
Interbreeds freely with Glaucous-winged Gull (Larus glaucescens) at northern end of range.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- occidentalis Audubon, 1839 - North-western Washington (Destruction I) to central California (Farallon Is).
- wymani Dickey & van Rossem, 1925 - Central California (Monterey Bay) to central Baja California (Guadalupe I).
