Canada (NB), Guatemala, Mexico (B), USA (B).
Breeds in Gulf of California (particularly Isla Rasa) south to Nayarit; also Baja California (from San Benito Is off Pacific coast) and northern very sparsely in southern California, occasionally and irregularly to San Francisco Bay.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 530,000 (2010) and fluctuating.
Status NT
Very small breeding range, egg collection, severe weather are the main threats.
