Habitat
Inland rivers, pools, reservoirs, lakes. After breeding on open grasslands.
Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad (B) (NB), Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea (B) (NB), Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia.
Vagrant to Niger.

A scrape in rocky uplands, lined with small pebbles.
Subspecies
Forms superspecies with African Three-banded Plover (Charadrius tricollaris). Formerly considered conspecific with African Three-banded Plover (Charadrius tricollaris).
