The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

vociferus Linnaeus, 1758 - Canada, USA and Mexico. Winters south to north-western South America.
ternominatus Bangs & Kennard, 1920 - Greater Antilles.
peruvianus (Chapman, 1920) - Peru and north-western Chile.
