Subspecies
Birds breeding on Bahamas and Greater Antilles sometimes separated as subspecies rufinucha.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • wilsonia Ord, 1814   -  Eastern USA to eastern Mexico and Belize, Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and northern Lesser Antilles. Winters south to eastern Brazil.
  • beldingi (Ridgway, 1919)   -  Pacific coast from Baja California to Panama and Ecuador, ranging south to central Peru.
  • cinnamominus (Ridgway, 1919)   -  Colombia to French Guiana. Also Netherlands Antilles, islands off Venezuela, Trinidad, Grenada and Mustique.
  • crassirostris von Spix, 1825   -  Transcaspia to south-eastern Kazakhstan. Winters in eastern & south-eastern Africa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Greater Sand Plover (Charadrius leschenaultii).
