Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, dry savanna, pastureland. From sea-level - 900 m.
Aruba, Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Trinidad and Tobago, USA, Venezuela.
Vagrant to Barbados.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies vigilans synonymous with nominate bistriatus.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- bistriatus (Wagler, 1829) - Southern Mexico south to north-western Costa Rica.
- dominicensis (Cory, 1883) - Hispaniola.
- pediacus Wetmore & Borrero, 1964 - Northern Colombia.
- vocifer (L'Herminier, 1837) - Venezuela, Guyana and extreme northern Brazil.
