Vagrant to Gambia, Rwanda.

Unknown to United Arab Emirates.

Subspecies
Several other subspecies proposed: doubtfully distinct are ehrenbergi of Dahlak I in Red Sea, and affinis on Red Sea coast of Ethiopia; also psammochromus included in maculosus, and csongor included in nominate capensis.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • maculosus (Temminck, 1824)   -  Senegal east to Eritrea and Somalia, and south to Uganda and Kenya.
  • dodsoni (Ogilvie-Grant, 1899)   -  Coastal Somalia and southern Arabia.
  • capensis (Lichtenstein, 1823)   -  Kenya south to South Africa, and western from Zambia to Angola.
  • damarensis (Reichenow, 1905)   -  Namibia, Botswana and south-western South Africa (Cape Province).
