Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa), but probably not conspecific as suggested by some authors. Range almost overlaps with that of Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa) in western Panama, and in past did so. Local subspecies hypomelaena of present species is the least similar to Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • hypomelaena (Gray, GR, 1846)   -  West-central Panama (Veraguas) to northern Colombia (Magdalena Valley).
  • melanopygia (Sclater, PL, 1857)   -  Western Colombia (Cauca Valley) to western Venezuela (L Maracaibo).
  • intermedia (Sclater, PL, 1857)   -  Northern and central Venezuela.
  • jacana (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  South-eastern Colombia east through southern Venezuela to Trinidad and the Guianas, and south through most of Brazil to eastern Bolivia, northern Argentina and Uruguay.
  • scapularis Chapman, 1922   -  Lowlands of western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • peruviana Zimmer, JT, 1930   -  North-eastern Peru (lower R Ucayali) and adjacent north-western Brazil (upper R Amazon).
