Tahiti (French Polynesia).
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Status EX
Known from the type only, collected by Forster and painted by his son in 1773. Extinction was probably caused by introduced rats.

Subspecies
May have formed superspecies with Christmas Sandpiper (Prosobonia cancellata) and extinct Moorea Sandpiper (Prosobonia ellisi).
