|
Medium. Longish, drooped bill. Sexes alike. Female averages larger than male.
Adults: Upperparts, brown heavily mottled with black feathers centers and brown or buff edges. Head boldly marked with buff central stripe from forhead to nape. Eyebrow, long buff. Brown line through eye. Pale buff cheek patch, streaked darker. Throat, neck, breast, buff and streaked brown. Underparts, brown, streaked throughout. Bill, brown, dark brown at tipped, drooped. Legs, short, yellowish-brown.
Female: As for male but larger.

Habitat
Favours areas of dense ground cover.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 29,000 (2010).
Status NT
Predation by introduced mammalian species, including Pacific Rat (Rattus exulans), cats, pigs and Weka (Gallirallus australis) is the main threat.

Voice
Male utters a low 'trerk, trerk, trerk' and 'queeyoo, queeyoo, queeyoo'.
Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Chatham Snipe (Coenocorypha pusilla), with which sometimes considered conspecific, especially in past. Subspecies barrierensis of Little Barrier I known from single specimen taken in 1870 and presumably extinct.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- iredalei Rothschild, 1921 - Little Moggy I, Big South Cape I and other small islands off Stewart I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, South Island Snipe (Coenocorypha iredalei).
- huegeli (Tristram, 1893) - Snares Is (North-east, Broughton and Alert Stack). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Snares Snipe (Coenocorypha huegeli).
- aucklandica (Gray, 1845) - Auckland Is (Disappointment, Ewing, Adams, Figure of Eight, Rose, Enderby, Ocean and Dundas).
- meinertzhagenae Rothschild, 1927 - Antipodes Is (Antipodes, Bollans, Archway and Inner Windward).
- barrierensis ! Oliver, 1955 - Little Barrier I. Extinct. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, North Island Snipe (Coenocorypha barrierensis).
- perseverance Miskelly & Baker, AJ, 2010 - Campbell Islands.
Similar Species
Latham's Snipe (Gallinago hardwickii)
Larger. Bill is straight. Eye set high on head. Legs are grey.
