Habitat
Dense vegetation and muddy areas, including grassy and sedge-covered marshes and swamps, muddy shores of lakes and watercourses, flooded fields and sometimes rice-paddies. Breeds in grassy swamp with dry hummocks. From sea-level - 2,700 m.

Status VU
Conversion of wetland habitat to rice cultivation and hunting are the main threats.

Nest
A depression in a dry hummock, scantily lined with grass, placed in a dense tuft of grass in or adjacent to marshland.
Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) and Noble Snipe (Gallinago nobilis), and might form part of Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) superspecies.
