Subspecies
Validity of subspecies uncertain.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
solitaria Hodgson, 1831 - High mountains of central Asia, from south-central Siberia through Altai, Tien Shan and Pamirs to Himalayas and probably southern Tibet. Winters south to eastern Pakistan and northern India, and east to Myanmar.
japonica (Bonaparte, 1856) - Mountains of Sakhalin and north-eastern China (Heilongjiang), and probably also from Stanovoy Mts through Dzhugdzhur and Kolymskiy Mts to Kamchatka, and south to Sikhote Alin. Winters from Amurland and Sakhalin to Kamchatka, and in Korea, Japan and eastern China.
