Large. Plump, with rounded wings, long bill. Sexes alike.
Adults: Face, chin, brownish-buff. Lores, bar on cheek, blackish-brown. Crown, brown with three broad blackish-brown bars across the crown and nape, edged with reddish-brown. Eyering, patch of skin behind eye, blackish-grey. Eye, dark brown. Back, scapulars, lesser coverts, dark brown, mottled with buff and dark rufous. Outer webs of scapulars, tan, outlined with pale rufous, forming two parallel lines down back. Lower back, rump, uppertail coverts, barred dark brown, tan and rufous. Tail, blackish with rufous notches. Uppertail has narrow dark brown bars and a terminal grey-brown band. Undertail, mostly black, broadly tipped with silvery-grey. Wing coverts, flight feathers, dark brown with dark rufous notches on outer webs, paler notches on inner webs. Rest of underparts, cinnamon buff with narrow dark brown bars, Breast, darker, with broad vertical blackish bar on side. Wing lining, blackish-brown, spotted rufous or barred buff. Bill, greyish-brown flesh, with a slightly darker tip. Legs, grey.
Female: May be slightly duller and narrower bars on underparts.
