Subspecies
Birds of northern Tanzania formerly awarded separate subspecies, katharinae.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ellenbecki Erlanger, 1905 - North-eastern Uganda and northern Kenya east to southern Ethiopia and southern Somalia. Also occurs in eastern Ethiopia.
decoratus Cabanis, 1868 - South-eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania.
loveridgei (Friedmann, 1928) - Western Kenya and western Tanzania.
