Afghanistan (B) (NB), Algeria, Chad, Egypt, India, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B), Israel, Jordan (NB), Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Oman (B), Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Western Sahara, Yemen (B).
Vagrant to Mali.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- coronatus Lichtenstein, 1823 - Sahara Desert, from southern Morocco and western Sahara east to northern Sudan and Red Sea.
- vastitas Meinertzhagen, R, 1928 - Sinai and neighbouring areas in Israel and Jordan.
- saturatus Kinnear, 1927 - Hilly country of interior Oman.
- atratus Hartert, 1902 - Southern Arabia through Iran to southern Afghanistan.
- ladas Koelz, 1954 - Pakistan.
