Subspecies
Birds of Iberia and north-western Africa formerly separated as subspecies aragonica. Possible subspecies enigmaticus, koslovae and bangsi now included in nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
orientalis (Linnaeus, 1758) - Iberian Peninsula, Canary Is (Fuerteventura, Lanzarote) and north-western Africa from Morocco to north-western Libya. Also Cyprus, Israel, Anatolia and Armenia.
arenarius (Pallas, 1775) - North-western Kazakhstan east to north-western China (north-western Xinjiang), and south to Iran, Afghanistan and south-western Pakistan (Baluchistan).
