Habitat
Lowland forest, especially wet thickets, swamp forest and mangroves.
Indonesia (B) (NB), Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status LC
Habitat destruction due to logging, hunting, predation from dogs, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Very close to Drummer Rail (Habroptila wallacii).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- pallida Rand, 1938 - North-central New Guinea, from R Taritatu (Idenburg) to R Sepik.
- inepta d'Albertis & Salvadori, 1879 - South-central New Guinea, from R Setekwa and R Noord (Lorentz) to R Digul and R Fly.
