Habitat
Inland wetlands. From sea-level - 4,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Paraguay, Peru, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Uruguay (B).

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in Rallus, or referred to genus Ortygonax. In past, sometimes regarded as conspecific with Blackish Rail (Pardirallus nigricans). Formerly listed as Pardirallus rytirhynchos, but this name is unidentifiable.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • simonsi Chubb, C, 1918   -  Pacific slope of Peru south to northern Chile.
  • tschudii Chubb, C, 1919   -  Temperate zone of Peru (southern from upper Marañón) to central and south-eastern Bolivia.
  • zelebori (Pelzeln, 1865)   -  South-eastern Brazil.
  • sanguinolentus (Swainson, 1838)   -  Paraguay, extreme south-eastern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina south to Río Negro.
  • landbecki (Hellmayr, 1932)   -  Central Chile (Atacama south to Llanquihue), and south-western Argentina.
  • luridus (Peale, 1849)   -  Southern Chile and southern Argentina to Tierra del Fuego (including Isla Grande); doubtful record from Falkland Is.
