Vagrant to Jamaica.

Unknown to Honduras.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 10,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in Rallus. Possible subspecies inoptatus of western Cuba included in nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • insolitus (Bangs & Peck, 1908)   -  Mexico to Costa Rica.
  • maculatus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Western Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago; Colombia east to the Guianas and eastern Brazil, and south to Peru and Argentina.
