Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Colombian Crake (Neocrex colombiana), and sometimes considered conspecific, but differs in plumage and in bill structure.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
olivascens Chubb, C, 1918 - Eastern Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas through central and eastern Brazil to northern and eastern Bolivia, north-western Argentina and Paraguay. Also Costa Rica and Panama, where status unclear.
erythrops (Sclater, 1867) - Coastal Peru, and Galapagos Is (Santa Cruz and Santa María).
