Habitat
Inland wetlands. From sea-level - 2,500 m.
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica (B), Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.
Vagrant to Virgin Islands (U.S.).
Unknown to Ecuador.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- gossii (Bonaparte, 1856) - Cuba and Jamaica.
- hendersoni Bartsch, 1917 - Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.
- woodi van Rossem, 1934 - Southern Mexico to north-western Costa Rica.
- bangsi Darlington, 1931 - Northern Colombia.
- flaviventer (Boddaert, 1783) - Panama and Colombia to Venezuela, Trinidad and the Guianas, and south to north, east-central and southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
