Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.
Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Voice
A repeated pig-like grunt uttered while walking.
Subspecies
Validity of subspecies questionable.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- plumbeiventris (Gray, 1862) - Northern Moluccas, Misool, Aru Is, New Guinea (except south), Karkar and New Ireland.
- hoeveni (von Rosenberg, 1866) - Aru Is and southern New Guinea (Setekwa R to Fly R).
- intactus (Sclater, PL, 1869) - ? Solomon Islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Intact Rail (Gymnocrex intactus).
