Habitat
Dense primary and old secondary tropical evergreen forest, preferring thick understorey, forest streams and pools. Also dense, low forest/shrub regrowth on recently abandoned rice-fields. From 150 - 900 m.

Range (Guide)

Indonesia (B).

Northern and north-central Sulawesi and Peleng (Banggai Is).

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss and degradation through logging, conversion to agriculture, development, predation by introduced mammals, hunting, are the main threats.

Voice
A snoring sound, apparently similar to that of Snoring Rail (Aramidopsis plateni). Also a quiet clucking sound uttered in alarm.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Snoring Rail (Aramidopsis plateni) which is grey on mantle, face and breast, barred on flanks and lacks bare blue patch around eye.
