Gal-li-rall'-us - L., feminine form from gallus, a game bird; N.L., rallus, rail: dieffenbachii - named after Ernst Dieffenbach, 1811 - 1855, a german naturalist and collector in New Zealand
Habitat
Not know but probably scrub and forest areas.
New Zealand (E) (B).
Chatham, Mangere and Pitt Islands (New Zealand).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Status EX
Scare in 1840 and extinct by 1872. Extinction probably caused by predation by introduced rats, cats and dogs, and loss of habitat due to fire.

Habits
Flightless.
Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Buff-banded Rail (Hypotaenidia philippensis) by some and as a full species by others.
