Habitat
Dense marshy vegetation, swamps, flooded rice fields, alfalfa fields, wheat fields, flooded pasture and other wet grasslands, open grassy savanna, crop stubble, brackish coastal Spartina species dominated grasslands and humid woodland edge. From sea-level - 1,500 m.
Argentina (B), Bolivia (B), Brazil (B), Colombia (B), Guyana (B), Paraguay (B), Uruguay (B), Venezuela (B).
Vagrant to Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
Southern Brazil to northern Argentina; also Colombia, Venezuela and Guyana; status uncertain in much of apparent range, e.g. probably breeds in province of Córdoba, Argentina.
