Subspecies

In the past, on occasion, South American birds were split into two subspecies, scolopaceus (Colombia to central Brazil) and carau (southern Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • pictus (Meyer, FAA, 1794)   -  Florida, Cuba and Jamaica.
  • elucus Peters, JL, 1925   -  Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.
  • dolosus Peters, JL, 1925   -  South-eastern Mexico to Panama.
  • guarauna (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  South America, except arid western coast, Andes and extreme south.
