Subspecies
In past, genus frequently labelled Choriotis, but Ardeotis has priority. Genus sometimes merged with Otis. Forms superspecies with Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori). All four Ardeotis have occasionally been placed in same superspecies.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
lynesi! (Bannerman, 1930) - Western Morocco (probably extinct).
stieberi (Neumann, 1907) - South-western Mauritania and Senegambia east to north-eastern Sudan.
butleri (Bannerman, 1930) - Southern Sudan; single record in north-western Kenya.
arabs (Linnaeus, 1758) - Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and north-western Somalia; south-western Saudi Arabia and western Yemen.
