Derivation
Du'-cu-la - N.L., ducula, a little duke - (from L.,dux, ducis, a leader - c.f. English duke): mullerii - Salomon Müller (1804 - 1864), German Ornithologist and collector in the East Indies

Vagrant.
Habitat
Dense lowland forest, swamp forest and mangroves, bordering or associated with wetlands, such as rivers, lakes and swamps.
Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).
Vagrant to Australia.

Northern and southern New Guinea, from western Geelvink Bay in Vogelkop region, east to Astrolabe Bay near Madang. Also Aru Island and from Mimka River in southern Irian Jaya east to Brown River near Port Moresby.

Habits
Singly or in pairs, occasionally in small groups, usually when flying above forest canopy or over waterways.
Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds in New Guinea.
Subspecies
Often placed in a species-group with Pinon's Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pinon) and Bismarck Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula melanochroa). Affinities have also been suggested between these species and the Barking Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula latrans) superspecies. Racial differences slight, and validity may require reassessment. Original spelling is mullerii, rather than müllerii or muellerii.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- mullerii (Temminck, 1835) - Northern New Guinea from eastern shore of Geelvink Bay east to Astrolabe Bay.
- aurantia (A. B. Meyer, 1893) - Aru Is and southern New Guinea from R Mimika east to R Brown, including offshore islands of Boigu and Daru.
