Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Cinnamon-bellied Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula basilica) and Finsch's Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula finschii), all of which are sometimes considered conspecific. Also closely allied to Shining Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula chalconota), which some authors include in this superspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- rufigaster (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) - Western Papuan Is, Vogelkop and southern New Guinea east to Orangerie Bay.
- uropygialis Stresemann & Paludan, 1932 - Yapen I and northern New Guinea east to Huon Gulf.
