Status LC
Habitat destruction and unsustainable levels of exploitation, hunting while congregating at fruiting banyan trees, are the main threats.

Subspecies
A distinctive species, notable for its striking sexual dichromatism. Considered by some authorities to form a subgroup with Superb Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus superbus) within the large Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) species-group. An alternative opinion allies it with Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) group, but does not consider it closely related to Superb Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus superbus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

perousii Peale, 1848 - Samoa.
mariae Pucheran, 1853 - Fiji and Tonga.
